Crime Prevention – Free Faraday Pouches – Tuesday 21st June
Our Treasurer, Geoff, has been corresponding with our local councillors since March in an effort to get free Faraday pouches for residents of Childwall. We are pleased to report they are on their way.
Our Councillors have now informed us that police will be giving away Free Faraday pouches to residents at the Childwall Triangle on Tuesday 21st June. Times will be posted here and on the WhatsApp Group as soon as possible.
If you are wondering what a Faraday Pouch is and why you might need one, here is a brief explanation. A Faraday pouch or bag (sometimes called an RFID bag) is lined with a material, frequently copper-based, which blocks the signal transmitted by a car key. This will prevent crooks from using the ‘relay theft technique’ to steal the car.
Not all cars need this extra safety precaution, but many modern cars are keyless entry vehicles, and thieves use boosters to amplify the key’s signal enough to open and start the car. Police advise owners to store keys as far away from the car as possible, but a signal blocking device such as a Faraday pouch will be added security.
Childwall has been a target for car thefts recently and giving out free faraday pouches is an attempt to lessen this problem.
If you’re not sure if you should be using a signal blocker to cut down the risk of your car being stolen, bring your key along to the Triangle on Tuesday afternoon and ask.
